Wattan is an award-winning, independent, professional media organisation based in Ramallah, Palestine. It was established in 1996 by three civil society organisations. Over the past two decades, Wattan has established itself as an important voice of Palestinian citizens, civil society, marginalized communities and groups, women and, most significantly, youth. Our team of reporters, correspondents, and experts in the West Bank and Gaza provide wide ranging reporting and programming on issues of public concern including sensitive and controversial topics that are rarely covered by mainstream Palestinian media.

News Editor

 

Job description

 

This position supports the English News Room Unit by providing a variety of translation, proofreading and editing tasks. This includes assisting an editor in chief, to whom this position reports.

 

 

Responsibilities

 

-Prepare, rewrite, translate and edit copy to improve readability

-Read copy or proof to detect and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax

-Plan the contents of publications according to the publication's style, editorial policy, and publishing requirements

-Verify facts, dates, and statistics, using standard reference sources

-Review and approve proofs submitted by composing room prior to publication production

-Develop story or content ideas, considering audience appeal

-Maintain news archives

 

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

-University degree in journalism (or related field)

-At least 3 years of similar experience in a recognised media organisation

-Fluency in English and Arabic (speaking, reading, writing)

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills

-Proficiency in computer applications (MS Word, Excel)

-Strong communication and interpersonal skills

-Ability to work well under tight timeframes and handle multiple projects simultaneously
