UNRWA is the United Nations agency responsible for the protection, care and human development of a population of some 4.6 million Palestine refugees living in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and the Syrian Arab Republic. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
In accordance with established Agency policy and procedures, the ideal candidate:
- Performs the GIS Technical Functions for SSD
- Create maps and graphs, using GIS software and related equipment.
- Meet with users to define data needs, project requirements, and required outputs.
- Gather, analyze, and integrate spatial data and determine how best the information can be displayed using GIS.
- Compile geographic data from a variety of sources including censuses, field observation, and existing maps.
- Analyze spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate into documents and reports.
- Update database, applying additional knowledge of spatial feature representations.
- Enter new map data through use of a digitizer or by direct input of coordinate information using the principles of cartography including coordinate systems, longitude, latitude, elevation, topography, and map scales.
- Analyze geographic relationships among various types of data (sociological, environmental, statistical data)
- Prepare metadata and other documentation.
- Operate and maintain GIS system hardware, software, plotter, digitizer, color printer.
- Move, copy, delete, and add files, drawings, and maps to output reports in hard copy or electronic transfer.
- Present information to users and answer questions.
- Retrieve stored maps.
- Provides GIS materials consistent with Headquarters and Field Offices (as feasible and appropriate), and coordinates work with other divisions, departments, and UN agencies and organizations, if needed.
- Supervises GIS super users in all fields and monitoring their work.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES
- University degree in computer science Strong practical knowledge and experience in either (i) GPS, GIS and cartography, including knowledge of current GIS software (ArcGIS, MapInfo) and use of MS excel and access;
- Knowledge of Remote Sensing and raster – vector integration technical is desirable
- Candidates should have familiarity with the UN system and NGOs.
- Minimum three years of relevant experience.
- Fluency in English; and Arabic.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational capabilities.
- High level of professionalism and ability to work independently under pressure and to adhere to strict deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds.
- Excellent oral communication skills.
- It’s desirable to have Education background which would be a plus.
- It’s desirable to hold a university degree in computer science, geography, geometry engineering, or any other related fields with a combination of relevant education and professional experience
- It’s desirable to have a good Knowledge of designing graphs and using Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
- Basic Salary: Monthly basic salary $1,261.40; plus a currency adjustment factor (present rate 4.68%) and monthly dependency allowance $18.65 and Group Medical Insurance GMI $12.00.
- Contract Duration: six months. Extension is subject to funds availability, continuing need and satisfactory
performance.
- Other conditions of service and benefits may apply.
- A regular staff member can apply to this LDC post but will not be allowed to assume such post through secondment as he/she needs to leave his/her current post to accept LDC appointment.
EQUIVALENCY
Candidates with an equivalent combination of relevant academic qualifications, professional training and progressive work experience may also be considered
